According to an exclusive article which was recently published by livemint, for Akasa Air, this partnership represents a remarkable achievement. Unlike its competitors, Akasa has swiftly positioned itself in the international market.

IndiGo took seven years to secure its first codeshare whereas Go FIRST, never established such an arrangement. The deal is particularly advantageous given the airline’s recent market entry in August 2022. The agreement offers strategic advantages for both airlines.

Akasa gains access to international routes and can deploy additional capacity to Abu Dhabi, thereby strengthening its global presence. Etihad, meanwhile, secures valuable passenger feed from India, addressing its need for network expansion following the collapse of Jet Airways.

A codeshare arrangement is a sophisticated commercial partnership between airlines that allows one carrier to sell tickets for flights operated by another. This collaboration enables passengers to book a single itinerary across multiple airlines, with benefits including unified baggage handling, potential loyalty programme miles, and simplified travel connections.

Historically, Etihad was an equity investor in Jet Airways, and this new partnership echoes previous bilateral arrangements that connected multiple Indian cities to Abu Dhabi. The India-Abu Dhabi bilateral agreements currently have substantial unused capacity from the Indian side, presenting an opportune moment for Akasa’s expansion.

For Akasa, funded by the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and recently placing additional Boeing MAX aircraft orders, this codeshare represents more than just a new route—it’s a potential catalyst for increased valuation and market credibility.
