In a recent episode of Tere Gully Mein, Ali Fazal explored Japanese food in Mumbai with our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani. With little to no knowledge about Japanese food and culture, Ali was a bit clueless about the Japanese dishes that we introduced him to. Over a bowl of ramen, noodles and sushi, he opened up about everything, from his life and career to behind-the-scenes film stories and personal travel experiences. He even shared a story from his trip to Kedarnath, where he had a near-death experience. Here’s what he shared.
Ali Fazal’s Horrifying Travel Story
Ali Fazal shared that during his school days, they used to go on many expeditions, trekking through the ranges of the Himalayas, Nag Tibba, Gangotri, the Valley of Flowers, and more. Since he has always been into hiking and trekking, he still carries a backpack everywhere with essentials like a charger, Swiss knife, and more.
Revealing more about those adventurous days, he recalled a near-death experience while hiking with his friends at Vasu Ki Taal, located above Kedarnath. Ali said, “Jab hum wahan peak par pohche, toh humne neeche dekha, aur doosri taraf ek khoobsurat, bada green lake tha.” He added, “Obviously, hamara dil chaha ki thoda sa dip le lete hain, upar paar karke lake par chale jate hain.”
It was around 3-4 PM by the time they were ready to make their way back. Hailstorms usually begin at this time, making the descent even tougher than the climb. To this, Kamiya said, “Haan, utarte time knees mein bhi dard hota hai.” Ali jokingly said, “Yahi ad aana chahiye screen pe, Osteo Pian!” which had everyone bursting into laughter.
He continued his story and said, “Wahi utarte time mera haath fisla tha, aur wo hamesha movies mein jaisa shot hota hai, waisa hi hua tha mere saath.” The hail made the rocks extremely slippery, causing his leg to slip and turning the moment into a near-death experience for Ali.

He Always Carries A Backpack
Ali Fazal has always had a habit of carrying his essentials with him. He believes that if he ever falls off the planet, his backpack could save him, and he carries almost everything in it. He said, “There’s always a book to read, a charger, a Swiss knife, a watch, paper and pen, stationery, a wallet, and some change apart from the wallet in case I get mugged, aur ek jagah thusa hua note bhi hai, kyuki sikko se aaj kuch hota nahi hai.” Kamiya was surprised to discover this side of Ali and immediately suggested making a video with him titled, ‘What’s in my bag, featuring Ali Fazal.’
