The Sengol symbol holds great significance in the history of the Chola dynasty, one of the most powerful and prosperous empires in ancient South India. Representing the majestic might and imperial authority of the Cholas, the symbol encapsulates the essence of their rule, artistic excellence, and cultural achievements.

In contemporary times, the Sengol held deep cultural importance in Tamil Nadu state. Shortly before India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru announced the dawn of freedom from the British. On midnight of August 15th, he received Sengol from Tamil Nadu. It denotes India’s diverse traditions. Moreover, it depicts a sense of continuity of traditions since the third century BCE.

Talking about this, Amit Shah wrote on Twitter, “The ‘Sengol’, represents the values of fair and equitable governance. It will shine near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s podium as a national symbol of the Amrit Kaal, an era that will witness the new India taking its rightful place in the world.”
