Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate the New Parliament Building on May 28. It will also house the golden spectre from Tamil Nadu and the symbol of the Chola dynasty, Sengol. The Sengol will be installed near the chair of the Lok Sabha Speaker. Additionally, the symbol holds the importance of ancient India’s power, honour, prestige and continuity of people’s hold.

The Sengol symbol holds great significance in the history of the Chola dynasty, one of the most powerful and prosperous empires in ancient South India. Representing the majestic might and imperial authority of the Cholas, the symbol encapsulates the essence of their rule, artistic excellence, and cultural achievements.
In contemporary times, the Sengol held deep cultural importance in Tamil Nadu state. Shortly before India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru announced the dawn of freedom from the British. On midnight of August 15th, he received Sengol from Tamil Nadu. It denotes India’s diverse traditions. Moreover, it depicts a sense of continuity of traditions since the third century BCE.

Symbol Of The Chola Dynasty
The Sengol symbol has silver craft with a coat of gold. It embodies the inherent strength, bravery, and valiance associated with the Chola rulers.
Additionally, the intricate details showcase the artistic finesse and craftsmanship for which the Cholas were renowned. The meticulous attention to detail, combined with the graceful contours, talks about the dynasty’s passion for art. Through its intricate craftsmanship and historical significance, the symbol continues to captivate.
The Sengol is set to take pride of place in the new Parliament building. However before, it was kept in the Nehru Gallery of the Allahabad Museum. The symbol’s timeless appeal transcends the boundaries of time and geography.
