A storm has erupted in the realm of international relations, marked by a contentious exchange between Maldivian politician Zahid Rameez and Minister Mariyam Shiuna, who made inflammatory remarks targeting Indians, alongside a scornful jab at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination. Their divisive comments have sparked widespread condemnation and triggered the hashtag Boycott Maldives to trend ferociously across social media platforms.
‘Boycott Maldives’ Turns Into A Trend On Social Media

The controversy stems from a series of derogatory statements from Maldivian leaders disparaging India and ridiculing Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to promote Lakshadweep as a tourist hotspot. This led to an outcry among Indian netizens, prompting a call for boycotting travel plans to the island nation.
In response, notable Indian personalities and celebrities swiftly took to social media to counter these sentiments. Bollywood luminaries such as John Abraham and Akshay Kumar passionately advocated for Indian tourism, emphasising the warmth of Indian hospitality and the diverse marine life in Lakshadweep. John Abraham, in particular, recommended visiting the picturesque Lakshadweep islands, extolling their beauty and the ethos of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (the guest is equivalent to God).

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar entered the fray by sharing a heartfelt post on social media. On his 50th birthday, he reminisced about his visit to Sindhudurg, emphasising India’s exquisite coastal offerings and hospitality. Tendulkar underscored the nation’s treasure trove of beautiful coastlines and unexplored islands, urging everyone to #ExploreIndianIslands.
Tendulkar’s sentiments were echoed by others, including actor Akshay Kumar. He expressed surprise at the derogatory comments towards India, a country that contributes significantly to the Maldives’ tourism. In a post on X, he shared his surprise at the hateful comments made by Maldivian authorities. Kumar also called for dignified responses and advocated supporting Indian tourism in light of such unwarranted hostility.
Came across comments from prominent public figures from Maldives passing hateful and racist comments on Indians. Surprised that they are doing this to a country that sends them the maximum number of tourists.
