In the early hours of Saturday, passengers on the Amritsar-Saharsa Garib Rath Express (Train No. 12204) experienced a very grave situation. As per a report by The Times of India, at approximately 7:22 am, a fire suddenly broke out in the “G-19” AC coach as the train was passing through Sirhind Railway Station in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district. An X user, @MudassirGoenka7, also posted images showing the burnt AC coach.
Reportedly, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Northern Railway staff, and local fire services acted promptly and managed to extinguish the fire quickly. All passengers were also safely evacuated from the adjoining coaches. Fortunately, the officials were successful in preventing the fire from turning into a major tragedy thanks to their quick response.
One Woman Sustains Minor Burns
A woman received minor burns during evacuation and was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib. Her condition, thankfully, is now reportedly stable. Station House Officer, GRP Fatehgarh Sahib, Rattan Lal, shared with TOI that initial investigations indicated an electrical short circuit as the cause of the fire. However, a detailed investigation has been ordered to ascertain the exact reason.
To limit damage, three affected coaches, including the one that caught fire, were detached from the rest of the train immediately. All passengers were rescued, and no casualties were reported. Officials also conducted another search inside the burnt coach to ensure no passengers were left behind. Reportedly, train services were temporarily suspended for repairs and safety inspections, leaving passengers stranded. Hopefully, the train will resume its journey shortly.
Thankfully, everyone was safe, and the woman only sustained minor injuries. Authorities are now awaiting further details on the incident.
