Did you know that Kerala is home to India’s only water metro? Yes, Kochi is India’s first city to have a Water Metro transportation system and it runs on electric boats. This breakthrough and sustainable transport in God’s Own Country has now caught business honcho Anand Mahindra’s attention and here’s what he thinks about it.

Anand Mahindra often takes to X (formerly Twitter) to talk about new innovations and technology, and even to share interesting things he finds on the internet. This time around, he shared digital creator Kavya Karnatac’s video about Kochi Water Metro and he seemed thoroughly impressed with this innovative transportation system. He even called Kochi “one the most unique cities in our country.”

Sharing the video, he said that Kochi is “defined by its waterways, so no wonder it hosts a Water Metro.” He even applauded the clever naming of the transportation system and said that more Indian cities need to “make such breakthroughs in citizen-friendly infrastructure.” Mr Mahindra especially pointed out that the boats used in this water metro project are “good looking, comfortable and emission-free.”

In the video shared by Anand Mahindra, Kavya Karnatac explained why Kochi Water Metro is an excellent example of eco-friendly urban transportation. The ticket for this metro starts at just ₹10 and it seamlessly connects Kochi’s islands and mainland, making travel easy, affordable, and sustainable in the region.

These electric boats take about 15 minutes to charge completely and can easily ferry up to 100 passengers in one ride. These boats also have a hybrid mode. They switch to a diesel mode while on a longer route. On average, they help make the commute easier for 10,000 people daily.

It is to be noted that these electric boats are all made in India. These boats are made to navigate in the narrow and shallow waters of Kochi. The seating is also comfortable and spacious, for the ease of travellers. 78 electric boats currently operate on the intricate network of waterways in the region right now. What’s more, is that you can also enjoy the beautiful views of Kochi while travelling in this water metro.
