Andaman and Nicobar Islands are all set to turn into a world-class tourism hub! According to Islands’ Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar, the authorities have worked out a detailed plan to transform the archipelago into the next big tourism destination in the world. Here’s all you need to know about it.
Andaman And Nicobar Islands To Set Tourism Overhaul
As per the data shared by Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Department of Tourism, there has been a notable surge in tourist arrivals in the archipelago. In 2022, they recorded 2,35,061 domestic and 4,461 international visitors. These numbers spiked significantly to 3,23,619 domestic and 9,025 international tourists in 2023.
Keeping this rising interest in mind, Andaman and Nicobar Islands authorities have mapped a comprehensive plan to build a modern infrastructure that will promote cultural heritage, encourage eco-tourism, and ensure sustainable growth.
Speaking to PTI, Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar underscored the beauty and strategic relevance of the islands. He mentioned that the archipelago has 836 islands and shared plans to “elevate it to international tourism standards.”

All You Need To Know About This Plan
To boost tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and make it a global travel hub, the authorities plan to develop a high-end hospitality infrastructure. Under the direction of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, they have approved the construction of four 5-star resorts on select islands already.
Another big part of this tourism overhaul will be the development of a dedicated yacht marina. As per the Islands’ Chief Secretary, it will be instrumental in “attracting cruise tourism and private yachts”, adding luxurious and premium touches to the tourism infrastructure.
In a bid to promote and conserve the heritage of the Islands, efforts are also underway to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition for the Cellular Jail. The iconic landmark is already featured on the tentative list of the World Heritage list.
