There’s no way you aren’t already aware that Assam is one of the most fascinating places to travel in Northeast India. Whenever the rest of India craves for fewer honks and more fresh air, they plan a trip to the magical Assam. However, your upcoming travel plans might be in jeopardy for quite some time following the incessant floods in Assam. The rain fury is seen increasing every other day. But there’s not enough national news coverage of the helpless situation in the State. And it did take the Country by surprise to see Assam Floods get front page coverage in the New York Times. Here’s a little more insight into the tidbits of the whole incident.
The New York Times Acknowledges Assam’s Misery?
Floods have ravaged every nook and corner of Assam since the last two months. Rivers, including Brahmaputra, Kopili, Paladadiya, Jia-Bharali etc, are flowing above the danger level in the state. Amidst such a crisis getting international coverage is a boon for Assam. Recently The New York Times is seen including the picture of a farmer named Hifijur Rahman, a farmer from Assam, on their front page. The picture shows Rahman fainting in his field after witnessing the damage caused by floods. It’s a part of their story titled “The weight of climate change”. It basically looks into how several parts of South Asia are currently dealing with contrasting weather conditions. The story says: “Global Warming is no longer a distant prospect that officials with short electoral mandates can choose to ignore. The increasing volatility in weather patterns means a greater risk of disasters and severe economic damage for countries already straining to increase growth and development and to move past the pandemic’s devastation to lives and livelihoods.”

What’s The Current Update On Assam Floods?
The situation in Assam is not getting better. Today the death toll in this year’s flood and landslides across the state is seen goin up to 62. Landslides are seen affecting Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Hojai, Kamrup and Kamrup (Metropolitan) and Morigaon districts in Assam. According to the bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 18.94 lakh people are suffering because of the heavy rainfall and subsequent floods and landslides. And at least 234 roads and 16 bridges have faced damage due to Assam floods. With the international coverage of the daunting situation the State is going through, we hope Assam gets a lot more attention and help soon!
