Legend has it that Kamakhya Devi performed penance on the Nilachal Hill, where the Kamakhya Temple stands today. It is believed that the goddess’s reproductive organ, known as the yoni, fell at the Kamakhya Temple, thus making it a site of profound spiritual significance.
