Recently, it was revealed that astronomic calculations have predicted that the holy month of Ramadan might begin on March 11, 2024, as reported by the Gulf News. As mentioned by Ibrahim Al Jarwan, who is the Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, confirmed the date. He also mentioned that the month will fall within the winter season.
Astronomical Calculations Reveal Ramadan Dates
According to the astronomical calculations, the holy month will begin on March 11, 2024. And as mentioned previously, the next Ramadan is expected to fall within the winter season with the phenomenon continuing till Ramadan 1453 AH in 2031. After this, it will transition into the autumn season. This is brilliant news, as ever since the fasting ended with Eid al-Fitr in 2023, we have all been waiting with bated breath for the holy month to return.
What Is Ramadan?
It’s worth mentioning that Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar has quite a spiritual significance. It marks when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammad. The month is characterised by fasting, blessing, and charity, which is one of the five pillars of Islam as well. Yes, during this month devotees engage in fasting from dawn to dusk, which itself is, of course, a reflection of their devotion and self-discipline.
How Is The Holy Month Observed By Muslims In The UAE?
At this point, it should be revealed that the UAE like other Islamic countries, relies on moon sighting. After the official announcements from moon sighting committees in Mecca are made, Ramadan begins. And it should be noted that the ending of the month-long fast also depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, which can be either 29 or 30 days long.

When the Ramadan tradition begins during mid-Shaban there is a celebration of Hagg Al Layla. During this, Emirati children dress in their festive attire and visit neighbourhoods to collect sweets and nuts while singing traditional songs.
