Imagine stepping into a museum, not just to view art but to become a part of it, quite literally. In the vibrant city of Marseille, nestled along the southern coast of France, a groundbreaking exhibition at the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean (Mucem) invites visitors to strip away societal conventions—along with their clothes.

The “Naturist Paradises” exhibition is not your typical art showcase. Once a month, the museum offers a unique experience where attendees can explore the rich history of naturism in Europe while completely nude, save for a pair of shoes to ward off pesky splinters. This bold initiative, held in partnership with the French Naturist Federation (FFN), aims to create a deeper, more intimate connection between the visitors and the art—most of which features nudity itself.
As you walk through the halls, the vulnerability of being naked in a public delivers a profound sense of liberation. The exhibition features over 600 pieces, including photographs, films, paintings, sculptures, and magazines. They have been collected from naturist communities and major cultural institutions. According to WION News reports, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Louvre, and the Swiss National Library in Bern contributed to it.

Marseille’s role as a “stronghold of naturism” is no accident. The city’s mild climate and open-minded culture have long made it a haven for those who embrace the naturist lifestyle. The roots of naturism in France trace back to the 1930s in the Provence region. However, its influence has since spread across the country, making France one of the world’s top destinations for naturist tourism.
But what if you prefer to keep your clothes on? Mucem doesn’t discourage clothed visitors, though a spokesperson noted that it might feel “a bit odd” given the exhibition’s theme. The exhibition is certainly designed to be an immersive experience. Here, the act of being nude is as much a part of the visit as the art itself.
“Naked, it’s very complicated to face someone on the battlefield,” says Christelle Bouyoud, a seasoned naturist, as per the France 24 reports. She sees the practice as more than just shedding clothes—it’s about shedding barriers, fostering unity, and embracing vulnerability.
The “Naturist Paradises” exhibition runs until December 9. It offers a rare and thought-provoking opportunity to engage with art—and yourself—in the most natural state possible.
