July 19 is a day the aviation industry can never forget.  Flight operations across the world were marred by a Microsoft cloud glitch. Check-in systems in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and several airports across India were affected. What resulted was serpentine queues for check-in at airports, flight delays and even flight cancellations from airlines like IndiGo, Akasa Airlines and SpiceJet. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced airline systems at airports resumed normalcy at 3 AM.

After Global Tech Outage, Airports Resumed Operations At 3 AM

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on July 20, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced an update on the Microsoft global outage. The official statement read that since 3 AM, systems across airports have resumed operations. Flight operations are also smooth. While there was a backlog owing to the disruptions the previous day, things are clearing out gradually. By July 20 noon, the Civil Aviation Minister and government expect all issues to be resolved.

The statement assures passengers that the government is closely monitoring the operations at their airports. It is working with the airlines to ensure refunds and travel readjustments are extended to the affected passengers. The statement ends by thanking passengers for their patience.

The Microsoft 365 outage gravely impacted the aviation sector on July 19. Hundreds of SpiceJet, Akasa Air, IndiGo and Air India flights faced delays. From whiteboard updates to handwritten boarding passes, Netizens took to X to share pictures and videos of the dire consequences of this global software glitch. At Delhi Airport, over 400 flights faced delays and 50, cancellations.

IndiGo & SpiceJet Release Travel Updates

IndiGo also released a travel advisory, requesting passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. In case of flight cancellations, the airline asked passengers to either opt for an alternate flight or avail of a full refund on flight tickets. The impact of the global outage has trickled down to the following day. While the Civil Aviation Ministry is working on resolving the matter, it’s better to check your flight status before heading to the airport.

Moreover, IndiGo posted another set of messages on X ensuring passengers that their team is working hard to ensure all their services are gradually restored. This includes baggage handling. While the airline deeply regrets the inconvenience caused to travellers, efforts are put to ensure speedy delivery of baggage.

SpiceJet also announced that it has resumed all its operations and bookings are available on all platforms. Despite global technical challenges, the airline announced operations of all its scheduled flights with zero cancellations.
