Baba Ramdev

In the latest episode of Stories From Bharat, our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani met Baba Ramdev, the yoga guru-turned-entrepreneur who made yoga popular in India again. We took a bicycle ride with him across his Patanjali Yogpeeth Campus in Haridwar and talked about his yogic journey. Scroll on to learn how he was first introduced to yoga.

Baba Ramdev’s 5 Decade Long Yogic Journey

Baba Ramdev, a name synonymous with yoga in India, took up this ancient Indian practice when he was only 5-7 years old. An intrigued Kamiya asked him if he had been interested in yoga since he was a kid. To this, he replied that his interest in yoga was piqued when he came across some books on yoga and actually learnt yoga from the pictures he saw in the books. He then revealed that he has been practising yoga for almost 50 years now and teaching it for about 35 years.

He jokingly added, “People believe my biological age is 25-30.” To give you all a little background, his real age is almost 60! He said that his family has an agricultural background and since he was against the whole foreign study culture, he left his government school to pursue studies in a gurukul. Baba Ramdev also decided to become a sanyasi during this time. According to him, being a sanyasi is an “anant yatra”.

Why Does He Eat Only One Meal A Day?

Unlike many babas and sanyasis, Baba Ramdev’s focus has always been health and yoga. He has been spreading the message about the benefits of this practice for decades now and believes yoga is the answer to all the health troubles in the world. Furthermore, he also feels that eating less and right is another way to ensure that a person always stays healthy.

Baba Ramdev eats once a day and even explained the reason behind it with a Sanskrit shloka. In simple terms, he meant that a person who eats once a day stays healthy or “nirogya”. A person who exercises, works out a lot or works as a farmer, can take up two meals a day, as they tend to burn it off. As for people who eat three meals a day, they tend to stay unhealthy or “sada rogi”. Lastly, those who take four meals a day would end up dead sooner rather than later!
