Balasore Flood: Water Level Recedes But Over 35,000 Still Reeling From Impact; Rescue Operations Underway

Over the last few days, the Balasore region of Odisha has been grappling with floods. A number of villages have been inundated with water and rescue operations are underway. Recent reports indicate that the Subarnarekha River, which was flooding during this last week is now flowing below the danger level. Despite the fact that the water level is receding, the people who were affected are still reeling from the impact.

Balasore Flood: More Than 35,000 Still Reel From Impact

According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, the water levels started receding on Friday, September 21, 2024. This was especially the case in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Balasore.

As per the data from the Special Relief Commissioner or SRC cited in the TOI article, a whopping 35,654 people are still grappling with the effects of the flood. These people are from across a total of 141 villages under five blocks. 

As many as 21,085 people are still housed in the 51 relief centres in the areas that were impacted by the floods. As per an article published by OdishaTV, around 130 houses have been damaged owing to this calamity.

Rescue Operations Are Still Underway; 21 Teams Deployed

In order to provide the necessary relief for affected people, one team from the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF team has been deployed. In addition to this, six teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force or ODRAF and 14 fire service teams have also been deployed.

If reports are to go by, as of now, the water level of the Subarnarekha River at Rajghat is 9.63 metres. This is below the danger level which is 10.36 metres. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the water level of this particular river reached 10.80 metres.

Balasore was the worst affected region owing to the flood.
