As parts of the world are facing the extreme wrath of mother nature, China’s capital city is no different. Beijing has evacuated close to 30,000 people amidst the city being lashed with heavy rainfall. It was recorded as receiving its highest rainfall yet. Here’s what we know so far.
Beijing Receives Record Rainfall As Typhoon Doksuri Arrives
On July 31, the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri passed through China’s capital, Beijing, resulting in the city’s heaviest rainfall this year. State broadcaster CCTV reported that more than 31,000 people had to evacuate their homes due to the situation, reported NDTV
The China Meteorological Administration stated that heavy rain persisted in the capital, Hebei, Tianjin, and eastern Shanxi as Doksuri dissipated over northern China.
Over the weekend, Doksuri, one of the strongest storms to hit China in years, caused widespread flooding in the southern province of Fujian, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate from their homes.
The average rainfall recorded in Beijing overnight reached 140.7mm. Fangshan recorded the highest record rainfall with 500.4 mm rainfall, as per the city’s observatory. Heavier rains are expected in the city’s Western and Sothern regions, reports stated.

What Has Happened So Far?
While there was no reported damage, construction work was halted on more than 4,000 construction sites. Scenic spots in the city were also reported to be closed off and almost 20,000 buildings were inspected for damage.
Typhoon Doksuri, also known as Typhoon Mangkhut, left a lasting impact on the affected regions. With its powerful winds and torrential rains, it caused widespread destruction to infrastructure and agriculture, displacing thousands of people.
Despite the challenges, communities have demonstrated resilience in the face of danger, coming together to aid in relief and rebuilding efforts. The typhoon is just one of the many natural calamities that are happening around the world.
