Bengaluru: ₹17-Crore Escalator At KR Market Subway Lies Defunct For Over 20 Months; Commuters Hassled

KR Market in Bengaluru is a popular market known for its fresh produce and vibrant flowers. It’s visited by hundreds of people on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the escalator on the pedestrian subway of KR Market has been lying defunct for the past 20 months. This escalator was developed at a cost of about ₹17 crore by the Bengaluru Smart City Capital Limited. Read on to learn more about this issue.

Escalator At KR Market Subway Gathers Dust Since 20 Months

A report by Bangalore Mirror sheds light on the inconveniences faced by visitors at Bengaluru’s KR Market. The escalator built at a cost of ₹17 crore was handed over to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) a year ago. For the last 20 months, the escalator has been gathering dust and lying defunct. This is a major issue for senior citizens, who use the subway to reach the other side of the road. They have no choice but to use the staircase which beats the point of having an escalator in the first place.

Many pedestrians complained to BBMP about the non-functioning escalator. A pedestrian, Amjad Pasha stated to Bangalore Mirror that it would be useful to solve this problem at the earliest. A homemaker, Anandi said that she was unhappy with the poor maintenance of the escalator at KR Market. Despite developing it by shelling out ₹17 crores, the escalator stopped operating eight months after it was opened to the public.

Inconvenienced Senior Citizens & Other Market-goers

Visitors were promised that a BBMP engineer would solve the matter in a few days. But it’s been 20 months and the escalator is still gathering dust, awaiting visitors and an engineer to fix it. Another engineer who joined office recently promised Bangalore Mirror that he would look into the matter instantly.

Apart from the escalator, Bengalureans want BBMP to ensure the subway is clean as pathways are littered with thrash and walls have paan stains on them.
