Bengaluru: Kempegowda International Airport Introduces Compulsory Mpox Screening For International Flyers

Kempegowda Airport Mpox Screening

Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has ramped up safety measures by making Mpox (Monkeypox) screening mandatory for all international passengers. This decision follows the confirmation of the first Mpox case in India, detected earlier this week in Delhi.

In response to this development, KIA has introduced new protocols to monitor and prevent the spread of the virus. Four testing kiosks have been set up at the airport. These facilities are actively screening all arriving international passengers. On average, the airport is testing around 2,000 passengers each day, according to reports from DNA.

A designated officer has been appointed to oversee the entire screening process. This includes testing and tracking procedures. In addition to testing, authorities have set up an isolation zone within the airport. This area will be used to manage suspected cases. Special attention is being paid to travellers arriving from regions with high Mpox prevalence. Countries in Africa, where Mpox has historically been present, are being closely monitored.

Any passenger who tests positive for Mpox will be placed in immediate isolation. They will also undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine. Following treatment, the infected individuals will be retested. Only after being cleared of the virus will they be allowed to leave quarantine.

Health authorities at the airport are working around the clock to ensure the virus does not spread. The goal is to prevent any further outbreaks while ensuring that the airport remains operational and safe for all travellers.

Mpox symptoms can vary but typically include fever, muscle pain, severe headaches, and skin rashes. The rashes can be painful and may spread across the body. There is currently no specific treatment for Mpox, which makes early detection and isolation crucial in containing the virus. Although vaccines used for smallpox have been found effective in preventing Mpox, they are not widely available. Health experts stress that the focus should remain on early testing and isolation.

Bengaluru Airport’s swift response is aimed at reducing the risk of transmission. As the world continues to deal with infectious diseases, airports remain vital in preventing further outbreaks. With their enhanced safety measures, KIA is taking strong steps to safeguard public health.
