Bengaluru-Mangaluru Highway NH75 Faces Immense Traffic Due To Fresh Landslips Near Sakleshpur

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in many parts of India leading to subsequent flooding and landslides. The latest news comes that a fresh landslip on August 2 near Sakleshpur has led to immense traffic on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway (NH75) via Shiradi Ghat. If you are planning to travel between the two cities in Karnataka by road, take note of this travel update!

Heavy Traffic On Bengaluru-Mangaluru Highway NH75

According to a report by The Hindu, landslips at Doddathappale village in Sakleshpur taluk of Haasan witnessed landslips on August 2. This ended up disrupting the movement of vehicles on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway (NH75). While efforts were ongoing to clear the debris of the previous landslips, the heavy rainfall triggered another series of fresh landslips at the same point. Some vehicles were lodged in the mud.

The Shiradi Ghat stretch of NH75, a popular route taken by road trippers to travel between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, has been hit by repeated landslips. The officials have been working tirelessly to restore the movement of vehicles and ensure the safety of commuters. NHAI has also hired excavators to aid in clearing the road.

Netizens Blame Illegal Construction & Projects For Landslides

On July 30, the X handle Karnataka Weather announced a landslide on the Mangaluru – Bengaluru NH 75 near Shiradi ghat. This was at Doddathappale, Sakleshpura taluka in Karnataka. Large chunks of the hillock collapsed on vehicles travelling on the road, badly affecting vehicular movement. The handle blamed the Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project for weakening the Western Ghats. The X user called it project “disastrous”.

Many Netizens took to the comments section of this post to express their concerns about the recurring landslides happening at the Western Ghats. @Kash12Shi recommended setting a daily limit on tourists travelling to the Western Ghats. His other suggestions included limiting the number of resorts on or near the ghats and preventing the further digging of the mountains for 4-lane roads.
