On February 9, BMRCL implemented a steep fare hike for metro services in the city, making Bengaluru Metro one of the costliest in the country! The fares were doubled in some sections and this has led to major public outcry. Now, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called for an immediate review of this fare hike.
Karnataka CM Asks BMRCL To Review Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike
On Thursday, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah asked Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to reduce Bengaluru Metro fares where “increases are abnormal”, after the recent hike. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to share that he has directed the Managing Director of the BMRCL to review and urgently address the recent fare hike and even said that “Commuters’ interests must be safeguarded.”
The way Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has implemented the Bengaluru Metro fare revision has led to anomalies, with fares more than doubling in certain sections.
I have asked the MD of BMRCL to urgently address these issues and reduce fares where increases are…

This comes after many people shared their displeasure with the sudden price hike in metro fares. Many people said that the fare surge is unjust. According to them, it is against the very concept of public transport as it is so costly. Some even shared that taking personal vehicles and AC buses around the city is more cost-effective than taking a metro now.
What Metro Fares Look Like After Recent Changes
Bengaluru metro fares were revised on February 9 and ticket prices in the city have increased by almost 50%. Namma Metro took the step on the recommendation of the Fare Fixation Committee and revised the fare structure. They introduced separate tariffs for peak and non-peak hours, just like cab-hailing platforms Ola and Uber.
According to this new price revision, the minimum fare for the first 2 kilometres remains the same at ₹10. The fare for 2 to 4 kilometres has been increased from ₹15 to ₹20. For commuters travelling on the Bengaluru metro beyond 30 kilometres, the fare has been increased to ₹90.

Public transportation should benefit the common people. Such a drastic fare increase is not in the interest of people who rely on metro services to commute around the city. Let us know your two cents on this in the comments.
