Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) recently welcomed the country’s first-ever made-in-India driverless trainset. The train, built by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd in Uttarpara, West Bengal, will be used in the Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro. BMRCL also announced that it will inaugurate the Yellow Line by March or early April.
First Made-In-India Driverless Metro To Roll Out In Bengaluru Soon

Being called a milestone for India’s metro rail development, Bengaluru Metro received its first entirely made-in-India, driverless train. According to the Hindustan Times, the stainless steel train is equipped with advanced automation and cutting-edge performance features. It will soon operate on the 18-km Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line, which will connect Electronic City with the rest of the city.
Manohar Lal, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, called it a milestone that reflects India’s progress. He also mentioned that India now stands third globally and “is on track to surpass the United States within five years” with its metro rail network.
According to BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao, the six-coach trainset is expected to reach Bengaluru by road before January 20. After that, it will be for signalling tests alongside the prototype train and could take up to two weeks. TRSL also promised to deliver two more trains by April, which will align with the inauguration of Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line.
All You Need To Know About This Trainset
While talking to Hindustan Times, Umesh Chowdhary, Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, said that this six-coach trainset is the first stainless steel metro train manufactured entirely in India. The train uses a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system for driverless operations.
As per reports, Titagarh will deliver one train set per month and after a couple of months, two trains per month will be delivered. TRSL is manufacturing 34 of the 36 trains as part of a ₹1,578-crore contract. Of these, 15 trains are for the Yellow Line and the others are for the Purple and Green lines of the Bengaluru Metro.
