According to the Hindustan Times, BBMP has made it compulsory for all property owners in Bengaluru to pay a ‘garbage tax’ towards waste management. This additional fee will be collected alongside property tax, effective April 1. With this new initiative, the Bengaluru administration aims to generate ₹685 crore in the current fiscal year.

This fee will be determined by the built-up area of residential properties. That means, for shops, hotels, and residential buildings, different types of tax are being levied. Here’s what the fee structure of residential properties, based on the built-up area, will look like –

  • Up to 600 sq ft: ₹10 per month
  • 600–1,000 sq ft: ₹50 per month
  • 1,000–2,000 sq ft: ₹100 per month
  • 2,000–3,000 sq ft: ₹150 per month
  • 3,000–4,000 sq ft: ₹200 per month
  • Above 4,000 sq ft: ₹400 per month

Furthermore, bulk waste generators who fail to follow in-situ waste processing will have to pay an additional ₹12/kg of waste. Meanwhile, those implementing in-situ composting will receive a rebate of ₹3/kg.

As per reports, BBMP decided to implement a garbage tax in Bengaluru to strengthen the city’s waste management infrastructure. It has already allocated ₹1,400 crore to the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML). As part of this initiative, 27 transfer stations will be established to eliminate black spots. Four biomethanisation plants and an 8 MTPD animal waste rendering and incineration facility will also be set up as part of the plan.

Furthermore, three sanitary waste processing facilities, each with a 25 MTPD capacity, will be set up. Also, a pilot project, in partnership with the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology, will establish a 5-tonne-per-day plastic and e-waste processing unit.
