Bengaluru To Get Another Cubbon Park! Yelahanka To Have A New 153-Acre Park Aimed At Reviving City’s Green Cover

Bengaluru is set to get a 153-acre park in Yelahanka, North Bengaluru, similar to its famous Cubbon Park. The decision comes as part of efforts to restore the city’s title as the “Garden City.” Karnataka’s Forest Minister, Eshwar Khandre, made the announcement, stating that this new green space will address the city’s growing need for natural spaces. The park will be developed in Yelahanka, an area rapidly expanding due to urbanisation.

The proposed park will be located on land that was previously under the Karnataka Forest Development Corporation (KFDC). This land, now with the forest department, will soon be transformed into a lush green space for the city’s residents.

The park will be named after Salumarada Timmakka, an environmentalist from Karnataka, known for planting and nurturing 385 banyan trees along a 45-kilometre stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur. Timmakka’s efforts to enhance greenery and promote ecological balance have been widely recognised, and she was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2019.

Bengaluru’s diminishing green cover has been a concern for its residents. The city, once known for its abundant parks and gardens, has seen a reduction in green spaces due to rapid urbanisation. This new project is seen as a step towards reclaiming the “Garden City” title that Bengaluru once held proudly. It is also part of a broader initiative by the state government to protect the city’s environmental heritage while catering to the needs of its expanding population.

Cubbon Park, one of Bengaluru’s oldest and most loved green spaces, has long been a symbol of the city’s connection to nature. It is a haven for joggers, nature lovers, and those looking for a peaceful retreat from the city’s busy streets. The park’s historical and ecological significance has made it a landmark in the heart of Bengaluru. However, in recent years, there were concerns over plans to construct a 10-storey building within the park’s premises. Public backlash led to the government revoking the decision, reaffirming the importance of preserving such vital green spaces.

The new park in Yelahanka aims to bring a similar sense of tranquillity and connection to nature for the residents of North Bengaluru. As the city continues to grow, particularly in its northern parts, the need for more green spaces becomes urgent. The development of this 153-acre park will provide a much-needed lung space for the area, contributing to the well-being of its citizens.
