The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is taking the city’s public transport system to the next level. They have embarked on an exciting journey towards sustainable urban transport with the launch of their first-ever air-conditioned electric buses. These eco-friendly vehicles have been rolled out for trial runs and are set to transform Bengaluru’s public transportation landscape.
Bengaluru’s First AC Electric Buses On Trial
In April 2024, Ohm Global Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, secured a contract to supply 320 AC electric buses to BMTC, according to a report published by Money Control. These buses are poised to replace the old Volvo fleet on two significant routes. The first is Vajra, which serves Bengaluru’s bustling tech corridors. The second is Vayu Vajra, a route dedicated to airport services.
This transition from Volvo buses to electric AC buses is expected to not only offer passengers the comfort of air-conditioned travel but also significantly reduce carbon emissions and combat the rising pollution levels in the city. Currently, five buses are being tested on the busy route between Kempegowda Bus Station and Whitefield, according to the Money Control reports.
These trial runs are being conducted to ensure the buses’ performance and reliability to meet the expectations before the fleet is fully deployed. Passenger feedback during these trials will also be noted. However, it was delayed and consequently pushed the project timeline all-together. The full fleet of 320 buses is expected to be deployed by March 2025.
A New Era In Public Transport
These AC electric buses are being introduced under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model. Here’s how it works:
- Ohm Global Mobility will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and charging the buses. Driver deployment will also be handled by them.
- BMTC will provide conductors to manage passengers on board.
- BMTC will pay ₹65.80 per kilometre to Ohm Global Mobility. The operator will ensure a minimum daily distance of 225 km for 350 days annually over 12 years.
BMTC’s existing electric fleet already includes 1,269 non-AC electric buses sourced from various manufacturers, according to Money Control. These new AC electric buses will add to this growing fleet, offering an upgraded travel experience. Compared to non-AC models, these buses promise enhanced comfort and a modern travel option. They will not only cut down on the carbon footprint of the city but will also prove to be a modern and efficient travel option for India’s IT hub.
With the launch of these new buses, passengers can look forward to a smoother, cooler and cleaner ride.
