The police in Karnataka’s Bengaluru are cracking down on unpaid challans and traffic fines. They recently made an announcement. In it, they stated that there were a number of motorists who had traffic fines totalling more than ₹50,000 pending. Hence, with the aim of ensuring that the unpaid dues are cleared, the police are taking action. Recently, a Yelahanka man paid ₹49,100 as a traffic fine. According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, the Bengaluru police caught hold of a man who had pending fines which totalled a whopping ₹49,100! This incident took place in the Yelahanka area of Bengaluru.

As per the article, this fine had been pending for quite some time. The deputy commissioner of police (north), in an announcement, said that the full amount of the fine was collected from the owner of the vehicle which was numbered KA50-S-3579.

The HT article also stated that around a few weeks ago, MN Anucheth, who is the joint commissioner of police, stated that as many as 2,681 vehicles in Bengaluru had fines of more than ₹50,000. The police are therefore cracking down on clearing these unpaid fines.

This is not the first time that such a huge sum of money has been collected as a fine from a motorist. As a matter of fact, the Bengaluru police recently discovered that a single two-wheeler had a fine pending of ₹3.2 Lakhs!

The owner said that he wouldn’t be able to clear it all in one go. Hence, he was given the option of either clearing the sum in instalments or facing FIR.
