Shastri Nagar Municipal Market To Close After 44 Years
According to an article which was recently published by Mid-Day, the market is being shut to make space for a new commercial space. The owners of the shop have accepted the offers from the builders and will soon vacate it.
The market consisted of a total of 59 licensed shops. It even used to have a shed for a fish market. As per the records of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC cited in the Mid-Day article, the market has been in existence since 1980.
It came up after the launch of the theatre called Kalamandir. Around 1974 when the news of a theatre coming up was circulated, eagle-eyed people set up shop there as they saw a business opportunity The market received threats and notices from the BMC but it stopped when the owners appealed to Bal Thackeray.

As per the Mid-Day article, many shopkeepers lament the loss of the market. The loss is more than just financial. While some are relocating to different neighbourhoods, others are closing shop permanently. But all agree that the market gave them some of the most memorable years of their career.
All in all, the market will be missed by the shop owners and visitors alike. It was a significant part of the daily lives of many locals and as such, its loss, while not widely felt, is definitely deeply felt.
