The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced free parking at 24 locations in South Mumbai’s A Ward. This comes in response to a sting operation that exposed a contractor charging motorists above the authorised rates. In a swift move, BMC has cancelled the contracts for these sites and handed control back to the local ward office. The civic body plans to maintain this free service until new contractors are appointed under a regulated system.

Motorists in South Mumbai can now enjoy free parking at several key locations including Eros Cinema, the old BMC building near Azad Maidan, and areas along Jamnalal Bajaj Lane and Bora Bazaar. These spots, previously under private contractors, are now managed directly by BMC officials. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the civic body’s decision affects sites mainly in Churchgate, Fort, and nearby business hubs.

These 24 sites were previously part of a broader network of pay-and-park areas managed by multiple private agencies. However, irregularities in rate collection and unauthorised parking arrangements led to public outrage, prompting immediate action.

Sting Operation Uncovers Widespread Malpractice

The BMC launched a sting operation on 19 April 2025 to verify complaints against parking attendants in A Ward. As reported by Hindustan Times, the investigation revealed that contractors had been charging beyond the prescribed fee and allowing parking in no-parking zones. One of the contractors was caught red-handed at Kala Ghoda.

BMC officials registered a case under IPC Section 420 for cheating and fraud. They have proposed to blacklist the contractor involved and are working towards stricter supervision for future appointments.

Plans For Transparent Parking Management

To prevent similar issues, the BMC plans to streamline parking management across Mumbai. As per Hindustan Times, officials will assign all 24 A Ward sites to a single agency under a unified contract. This move will simplify oversight and help avoid contractor misuse.
