Bottled Vs. Canned Beer: Which One Keeps Your Brew Fresher, Tastier, And More Enjoyable?

Beer is not just a beverage. It’s a culture. It’s a craft and a passion for many. Whether you’re enjoying it on a summer day at home or with friends at a pub, it’s a drink that brings people together and offers refreshment. Whether you are a craft beer enthusiast or a casual drinker, there is no denying that the influence of beer has been significant on global taste trends. But when it comes to choosing between beer in bottles or cans, the debate goes on. Does the packaging really affect the taste? Let’s crack open this discussion.

Beer has been enjoyed for centuries and has grown into one of the most widely consumed alcoholic beverages in the world. And as beer culture has grown, so has the debate over the best way to package it. Is beer better in a bottle or a can? Does the choice of vessel really affect the taste, experience, and sustainability of your brew?

For many beer enthusiasts, sipping their favourite beverage from a bottle brings back fond memories. Historically, glass bottles have been the standard for beer packaging. In particular, brown glass is used extensively because it provides some light protection. When hops are exposed to UV light, chemical reactions take place that produce “skunky” beer. Brown glass bottles, however, filter this out fairly well.

But the quality of the beer is influenced by more than just the bottle. Bottles are heavier and more fragile and take up more space in transport. They have a larger carbon footprint because they need more fuel to ship. Glass can be recycled, but it is more difficult than aluminium.

The use of cans as a packaging option for beer was a game-changer. Cans had a bad reputation at first, mostly because of the metallic flavour they added. However, modern cans are lined with food-safe plastic coatings that block any unwanted metal flavours. Additionally, unlike bottles, cans completely block out UV light, protecting the beer’s flavour. They also offer a far tighter seal than bottles, preventing oxidation.

Cans also cool down much faster than glass bottles. Plus, they are much more durable and lighter than glass. There’s no risk of breaking, especially during transport. Cans are also more environmentally friendly because aluminium can be recycled indefinitely.

Which One Works Best For You?

The question of whether beer tastes better from a bottle or a can largely depends on who you ask. Some beer connoisseurs argue that the glass bottle provides a more ‘traditional’ experience. However, from a practical standpoint, cans have clear advantages. They provide superior protection against light, air, and temperature fluctuations.

No one enjoys a skunky beer, and cans almost eliminate that risk. As for the metallic taste, it’s likely due to smelling the can itself. For most people, cans offer a better experience, especially in terms of flavour and convenience. They cool faster, protect your beer better, and are more eco-friendly. So, the next time you grab a six-pack, think about how you want to experience your beer.
