Indian Railways has decided to create permanent waiting areas outside 60 major railway stations across India to prevent overcrowding at railway platforms. After this, only passengers with confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the platforms. The Union Railways Ministry believes this will help authorities better manage the passenger flow. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a meeting with top railway officials on Friday and announced a series of new crowd control measures. Here’s all you need to know about them.
Indian Railways Introduces New Crowd Control Measures
To control periodic surges in passenger flow and enhance station management, Indian Railways has approved several key crowd control measures. According to the Hindustan Times, they have chosen 60 stations across India that frequently experience heavy congestion.
To start with, they have planned to make waiting areas outside the stations. This will allow only passengers with confirmed tickets to enter the station and ease the crowd at the platform. However, they have not revealed the names of the railway stations selected for the initiative yet.
They have also approved the construction of wider foot-over bridges (FOBs), the installation of war rooms and the implementation of advanced communication tools to improve passenger safety. Also, they plan to seal all unauthorised entry points at the stations.

All You Need To Know About This New Plan
As per reports, Indian Railways will install standardised FOBs across all major stations. These FOBs will feature two width options —12 metres and six metres — based on new design specifications and will have ramps that will further help control crowds. Also, to boost station security, authorities plan to install a significant number of cameras for real-time monitoring of station premises and surrounding areas. Major stations will be equipped with war rooms, where officers from multiple departments will coordinate crowd control efforts.
Furthermore, communication systems will also undergo a major upgrade. Hindustan Times reported that walkie-talkies, public announcement systems and calling networks will be modernised across heavily crowded stations.
