Can Solar Power Make A Protein? Time To Taste The Future With Solein, Made Out Of Thin Air!

Solein

A protein made out of air represents an exciting and potentially game-changing approach to sustainable food production. It might sound like a concept out of science fiction, but it is an emerging field of research. Some days back in Singapore, Solein, which is said to be the world’s most sustainable protein had its first tasting.

What Is Solein?

Finnish food tech company, Solar Foods started the concept of Solein.  A bioprocess using CO2 and energy rather than soil makes up this protein.  It is a totally original method of generating an all-purpose component that may take the place of protein derived from either plants or animals without using any farms.

The ability of Solein to transform food production and free the earth from industrial agriculture seems greater than that of any other new food. To make sure that it is not only sustainable but also a highly useful, wholesome, and adaptable ingredient, it can be utilised as a structure-forming and nutritive element in ordinary foods in lieu of animal or plant proteins because it doesn’t alter the flavours of comforting dishes.

However, Singapore is the only country that’s given Solein the green light. Approval in the European Union isn’t expected before 2025.

How Is This Air-Based Protein Made?

This innovative approach has the potential to revolutionise the way we produce food, addressing sustainability challenges and providing a viable protein source for a growing global population.

This component is produced via fermentation and microorganisms. According to the corporate website, they start with a single microbe, ferment it, and then “feed it” carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and electricity. The finished product must then be harvested. It includes water, which is taken out to reveal Solein, a powdered chemical.

It is a fine powder, the colour of haldi and is touted as the ‘future of food.’  The flavour of Solein is subtly distinctive and has a lovely umami undertone. It enhances the flavour of the dishes it is used in.  It can be used to prepare dishes, like pasta, salad, ice cream and more.

Looks like air-based protein like Solein has the potential to play a significant role in shaping the future of food!
