Canada’s Unlimited Working Hours Rule For International Students To End This Month; Know More

If you’re of a certain age and live in a city, chances are you know of someone (or several someones) who went abroad to study. Before the pandemic and more so after it, a huge chunk of the young population went abroad to countries like the US, the UK and Canada for studies. Last November, Canada passed a new rule under which international students in Canada would not be bound by the 20-hour work limit. That rule is now nearing its end.

If you’re familiar with Canada’s work policy for international students pursuing degrees in the country, you know that students are not allowed to work more than 20 hours per week off campus. However, in a groundbreaking move last year, the country removed this restriction for students for a year. This means that students who have applied for a study permit could work off-campus for unlimited hours.

However, it was stipulated that the rule would only be applicable till December 31, 2023. This means that the unlimited working hours rule is soon set to end. Applicants would be eligible for the unlimited working hour rule if they met certain requirements.

Here Are The Eligibility Conditions For The Rule

Following are the conditions for those who applied for a study permit on or before October 7, 2022:

  • You hold a study permit.
  • Your study permit expired but you’re still studying at a DLI or Designation Learning Institution.
  • Your study permit is approved but you haven’t arrived in Canada yet.
  • Either of the following conditions are printed on your permit:
    • You may work 20 hours per week off campus.
    • You May accept employment on or off campus if you meet eligibility requirements.

Following are the conditions for those who applied for a study permit after October 7, 2022:

  • You’re applying for an extension of your original study permit which expires between November 15, 2022, and December 31, 2023. In this case, you can work for more than 20 hours off campus. However, once your original permit expires, you must stop this once your original permit expires.
  • Your application for the original study permit reached them on or before October 7, 2022.
  • You’re a study permit holder who is studying full-time at a DLI.

If you met these conditions, only then would you be permitted to work an unlimited number of hours in Canada. This rule, sadly though, is nearing its end. Many students work multiple jobs while they’re studying to support themselves and their dependents, if any.
