Celebrating New Year In Shimla? Over 1 Lakh Tourists, 2 Lakh Vehicles Expected In The City

2023 is soon going to end, and people are gearing up for 2024. While some are busy planning parties at their house, some people are flocking to destinations like Shimla and Manali to ring in the new year 2024. While we say that many people have already reached Shimla for New Year celebrations. An estimated 1.5 lakh visitors arrived in Shimla for Christmas, and between 80,000 and 1 lakh more are anticipated to attend the New Year’s festivities. 

Over 1 Lakh Tourists Expected In Shimla

Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, the superintendent of police in Shimla, announced that they would be putting on a similar celebration on December 31st, modelled after Christmas and winter carnivals. The town had up to 1.5 lakh tourists throughout the Christmas season, and for the year-end festivities, they expect between 80,000 and 1 lakh people to attend, in addition to close to 2,50,000 cars.

Over the course of the last ten to eleven days, 1,60,000 vehicles passed over the Shoghi Barrier in the capital city of Shimla. With the advent of tourists and almost 3 lakh residents, Shimla police have successfully instituted a one-minute traffic strategy. Gandhi said that they have also made it easier for people to travel freely on internal roads.

Additionally, the Shimla SP stated that the department uses drones and CCTV to monitor traffic. They have put plans in place at popular tourist spots in Shimla, including the Ridge, Narkanda, Kufri, and other areas. They have used drones and CCTV cameras to keep an eye on human activity and traffic jams. In addition to concentrating on effective traffic management, security, and safety, they also make an attempt to offer tourists advice.  (As per The Times Of India)

Huge Influx Of Tourists

Tourists are pouring into Himachal Pradesh’s hills for the winter carnival and New Year’s festivities. There are tourists here because they are hoping to see snow. People also reported that hotels are charging three times the standard price because of overcrowding. Due to the strong demand from tourists, some have also had trouble booking lodgings. 

Over the past several days, Shimla has seen a rush of approximately 55,000 cars arrive in celebration. Kullu, Lahaul, and Spiti are connected by the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, which has seen almost 55,000 vehicles pass through.  This volume of traffic has climbed dramatically in the last three days.

Long lineups of cars can be seen on the roadways in several videos that have been circulating on social media. Sanjay Kundu, the Shimla Director General of Police, has urged guests to prioritise their safety and follow traffic laws.
