We might see an end to the Chadar Trek by 2020 as climate change becomes a real threat for trekking enthusiasts to traverse the length of the ice road famously known as Chadar.
The Chadar route was used by the locals of Zanskar Valley to source their basic supplies from the towns during peak winters. The extremely low temperatures spanning a 105km length make this trek the most challenging.
A lot of reasons have led to the end of the Chadar trek, climatic changes, global warming and the human waste found on the trail. With over 400 people hoarding the trek, there’s a huge amount of litter, waste and human excreta found on the frozen river every year.
One of the most enthralling treks would see a downfall if travellers do not become more responsible for sustainable tourism and maintaining the ecology of the tourist spot. There are various ways in which we can promote sustainable and eco-tourism.
