In response to the worsening summer crisis and severe heatwave conditions, the Chandigarh government has implemented strict measures to control water wastage. Starting April 7, 2025, anyone found wasting water in the city will face a fine of ₹6,000. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla announced this initiative, emphasising the urgent need for conservation at this critical time. The fine is intended to reduce water wastage and promote responsible behaviour among residents. Additionally, those who persist in violating water usage regulations may face a complete cutoff of their water supply.
IMD Declares Heatwave Warning For Chandigarh
The decision comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) releases alerts of the prevailing heatwave conditions over northern India, specifically Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and surrounding regions. The weather forecast predicts that the high-temperature conditions will continue over the next few days, posing serious health risks and putting tremendous strain on civic facilities.
With that in mind, the IMD has recommended that citizens stay away from prolonged exposure to the sun and stay hydrated during the day. Essential tips include drinking water regularly, consuming Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS), and drinking traditional homemade beverages such as lemon water, buttermilk (lassi), and salted fruit juices to avoid dehydration and heat strokes.

Public Awareness And Water Conservation Measures
As reported by Republic World, the Chandigarh government will also launch a campaign to inform people about the need for water conservation. As lakes and reservoirs are facing more pressure with rising demand, the administration is appealing to people to be sensitive and not use drinking water for non-potable purposes such as washing vehicles, gardening, or leaving taps running.
This effort reminds us of our civic duty during severe weather. The action has initiated debate among the citizens, with most supporting the strict approach to avoid further water crises. The Chandigarh government’s decision to fine residents for waste as the summer heat builds sends a clear message: every drop of water counts.
As harsh heatwaves are expected to persist, water conservation is not only needed but also a civic responsibility for all of us. By imposing this ₹ 6,000 fine and issuing the threat of supply cut-offs, the administration wants to create a more water-conscious society.
