At least one fatality and 28 missing persons have been reported following a devastating landslide in Sichuan province’s Jinping village, southwestern China. The disaster struck at 11:50 AM local time on Saturday, February 9, 2025. The Landslide ended up engulfing a total of ten homes and their occupants. According to an article that was recently published by the BBC, Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued urgent directives for an extensive rescue operation. He instructed authorities to spare no effort in locating survivors and managing the aftermath.

A command centre has been established at the site by the county’s emergency management bureau to coordinate the response. Dramatic footage from state media reveals the catastrophic scale of the incident.

The video shows a massive deluge of mud and rock that cascaded down a steep mountainside, cutting a devastating path through the small village below. In response, hundreds of emergency personnel have been deployed to the area.

More Details About This Tragic Catastrophe

Around 200 residents have been safely evacuated from the danger zone. Premier Li Qiang has called for a thorough investigation into potential geological hazards in surrounding areas. Local residents have reported frequent rockfalls in the preceding six months.

The Premier has emphasised the importance of preventive evacuations to avoid further casualties. To support recovery efforts, the central government has allocated 50 million yuan (approximately ₹600,898,500) for infrastructure repairs and restoration of public services.

The remote, mountainous terrain of southwestern China has a history of such disasters, with a similar incident in Yunnan province claiming multiple lives in January 2024.

Emergency operations continue as rescuers race against time to locate the missing villagers, whilst authorities work to prevent any secondary disasters in the affected region.
