According to an article by The Times Of India, the Union govt will give special attention to the development of Gannavaram Airport. Speaking during the opening of the Vijayawada-Delhi Indigo service and the new approach road at Gannavaram Airport, the ministry emphasised the government’s commitment to improving air connectivity in Andhra Pradesh. This is scheduled to commence on October 27. With Visakhapatnam emerging as a hub for industries such as IT, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, this direct air link to Delhi is expected to stimulate business opportunities and attract more investments to the state.

In addition to the domestic route expansion, the state has already operational flights to Sharjah from Vijayawada. This marks a significant milestone as it opens up an international gateway for the region. Plans are in place to expand international services to Dubai and Singapore. They also announced another exciting development: a new flight service between Vijayawada and Pune, scheduled to begin on October 26. The Pune-Vijayawada route holds particular significance. It links Andhra Pradesh with Maharashtra, strengthening ties between the two economically vibrant states.

Increasing Air Connectivity In Andhra Pradesh

Increasing air connectivity to Andhra Pradesh is expected to have a ripple effect on the tourism sector. Vijayawada has long been a favourite destination for both domestic and international tourists. Better air links to major cities like Delhi will undoubtedly make it easier for tourists to visit the region. This will potentially drive up tourist footfall and generate greater revenue for the state’s tourism industry. Similarly, Vijayawada is becoming an increasingly important destination for business travel, given its growing importance as a political and economic hub in the state.

The push to expand international flights from Vijayawada is also a reflection of the growing demand for global travel. The UAE, particularly Dubai and Sharjah, is home to a significant population of non-resident Indians (NRIs) from Andhra Pradesh, many of whom regularly travel back to their home state.

The introduction of new domestic and international flight services from Vijayawada is all part of a broader strategy to boost the state’s visibility on the global aviation map.
