Egypt: 4300-Year-Old Ancient Tomb Discovered At Saqqara Belonging To An Egyptian Judge

A 4,300-year-old tomb was uncovered at the Saqqara necropolis. This belonged to an ancient Egyptian judge who was responsible for hearing public grievances during the reign of the fifth Dynasty Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi. As it happens, this was uncovered by an Egyptian-Spanish archaeological mission, and here’s all you need to know about it.

4300-Year-Old tomb Uncovered In Egypt

It was revealed in a report by Gulf News that the mastaba tomb belongs to an official with a judicial role involved in addressing complaints and grievances. It reflected the importance of justice and social order during the ancient Egyptian administration. Through the discovery, archaeologists also found two decorated funerary chapels inside the tomb. One of these was dedicated to Yunmen and the other was to his father, Ity. His father was a senior scribe who was responsible for overseas agricultural lands and offerings.

Uncovered In Mariette Cemetery Area Of Saqqara

The discovery in Egypt was made in the Mariette Cemetery area of Saqqara. At the burial site, walls contained detailed reliefs that depicted scenes of daily and funerary life. This included farmers who were working and servants who were seen carrying offerings and rituals that were being performed for the dead. Not only this, many of the paintings and decorations also retained their original colours and are expected to be over four millennia old. These paintings offer a rare glimpse into the artistic techniques and traditions related to funerals that were followed in the Old Kingdom of Egypt.

Tomb Belongs To The Era Of Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi

For those who aren’t aware, Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi is set to have ruled towards the end of the Fifth Dynasty in Egypt. The period dates to the third millennium BC. It is also associated with significant developments in the administration of the Egyptian state in ancient times. Saqqara, which is situated south of Cairo, served as a vast burial ground. This was for the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. Moreover, it also contained monuments which spanned thousands of years. A notable monument here happens to be Step Pyramid of Djoser.

So, with the latest discovery in Egypt, researchers get a glimpse of ancient times. At this point, it’s worth mentioning that this discovery is part of the continuing excavation at the necropolis.
