Before getting into the details, here’s what Chillai Kalan actually means. Chillai Kalan is the name given to a 40-day period of harsh winter in Kashmir. It usually begins on December 21 and lasts until January 29 every year. According to a report by NDTV, not just snowfall but rain also lashed the plains of the valley on Sunday. This ended a dry spell of nearly three months. The snow and rain washed down suspended particulate matter from the air, making it fresher and cleaner. An X user, @GoJammukashmir, also shared a video showing the onset of Chillai Kalan in Kashmir.
As per a report by The Times of India, snowfall was also reported from Gulmarg, a popular tourist resort in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir. Around two inches of snow accumulated in the area. In Sonamarg, located on the Srinagar-Kargil highway, snowfall began early on Sunday. Visuals shared on social media look magical. Everything is covered in white, making Kashmir look like a fairytale town.

More Snowfall Expected In The Coming Days
According to a report by The Times of India, Sadhna Top, the mountain pass connecting the Tangdhar sector along the Line of Control, recorded moderate snowfall of about six inches. Light rainfall was also reported in Srinagar and other parts of the valley. The weather department has predicted an increase in both snowfall and rainfall across Kashmir over the next 48 hours.
While temperatures are set to drop further, Chillai Kalan is also expected to give a boost to tourism in the region. Many travellers are likely to visit Kashmir to experience the white winter in person rather than just watching it on social media. Authorities have also reviewed arrangements related to roads, power supply, water supply, and health services to deal with heavy snowfall.
