Who would have thought that a humble farmer’s discovery would blossom into a global fragrance empire? Ajmal Perfumes, now a hallmark of aromatic elegance, began its journey in the most unlikely of places. From the small village of Hojai in Assam, India, to a presence in over 50 countries, this is the story of how Haji Ajmal Ali’s modest start in 1951 has since transformed into a multi-million dollar, world-renowned fragrance dynasty.
From Fields To Perfumes, The Humble Beginnings Of The Oudh King
Haji Ajmal Ali was more than just a farmer, he was a visionary with a nose for opportunity. In his village of Ali Nagar, Assam, he stumbled upon the potential of Agarwood, a wood that produces the coveted Oudh used in perfumery. At a time when Agarwood was hardly valued, Haji Ajmal saw its latent worth. Starting small, he began trading this precious wood, eventually catching the attention of merchants in Bombay (now Mumbai) and Arab traders.
Abdulla Ajmal, the current CEO of Ajmal Perfumes, recalls, “Somebody introduced him to the concept of Oudh. It grew in our backyard but wasn’t valued then. He started trading it, moving to Mumbai in the ’60s, and eventually to the Gulf. Dubai didn’t even have an airport then!”
The Rise Of Ajmal Perfumes, The Fragrance Dynasty
With a vision that spanned beyond the ordinary, Haji Ajmal established Ajmal Perfumes, laying the foundation for what would become a fragrance empire. Moving his family to Mumbai and later to the Gulf, he set the stage for exponential growth. Abdulla Ajmal, who followed in his grandfather’s footsteps, vividly remembers his early training. “My initial training was intense. I learned from my uncle, who was both a mentor and the nose of the company. I had to study ingredients, manage the shop, and interact with customers. It was hard work, but it shaped my understanding of the business, a blend of ingredients, personalisation, and storytelling,” he says.
A Blend Of Tradition And Modernity
Under Abdulla’s leadership, Ajmal Perfumes has seamlessly woven tradition with modernity. While his grandfather focused on traditional Oudh and essential oils, Abdulla has broadened the brand’s portfolio to include contemporary fragrances, now making up 50% of their offerings. Abdulla declares, highlighting his ambitious vision for the future, “My mission is to transform the brand globally. We’ve evolved from bullock carts to BMWs; now we aim for Boeing!”
Family Values And Business Ethics Of Abdulla Ajmal
Ajmal Perfumes isn’t just a company; it’s a family legacy. The Ajmal family’s support has been integral to the brand’s success. Abdulla’s grandmother was a driving force behind Haji Ajmal’s ventures, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the family. The company also upholds strong business ethics, including a family governance mandate to safeguard against personal conflicts. Furthermore, Ajmal Perfumes donates 10% of its net profits to charity, a tradition initiated by Haji Ajmal’s wife and continued within the company.
Abdulla Ajmal is committed to honouring his grandfather’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of innovation. He has focused on acquiring patents in seven countries for Oudh inoculation and harvesting techniques. “While Agarwood grows globally, Indian Oudh remains unmatched in quality. We take immense pride in our heritage,” Abdulla says, underscoring the unique quality of their products.
