The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal may develop into Cyclone Dana by October 23. This cyclone is expected to make landfall between Odisha’s Puri and West Bengal’s Sagar Island by the night of October 24. The state authorities are preparing for the cyclonic impact and have decided to shut down schools and evacuate residents in high-risk areas immediately.
Cyclone Dana Expected To Hit Odisha & West Bengal On Oct 24
Odisha and West Bengal are preparing to brace for the impact of Cyclone Dana in the next 48 hours. As per IMD’s forecast, the cyclone will make landfall in Odisha by the night of October 24. According to NDTV, severe storms with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph are expected to hit north Odisha and West Bengal coasts during the cyclone.
The cyclone warning has prompted the Odisha government to shut schools and warn fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea on October 24. IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in the state between October 23 and October 25. A red alert has been issued for coastal districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak.
The evacuation process is also underway in Odisha in areas where Cyclone Dana is expected to hit. Reportedly, over 800 multipurpose cyclone shelters are being readied for the people. These shelters will be equipped with electricity, food, and water. Also, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has kept several teams on standby for rapid response. They have deployed 14 teams in West Bengal and 11 in Odisha.
Dos & Don’ts Recommended By National Disaster Management Authority
While the states have put emergency measures in place, according to Hindustan Times, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has recommended some steps for residents in Odisha and West Bengal to prepare for Cyclone Dana emergency.
For pre-cyclone preparations, NDMA suggests –
1. Inspecting the house properly and securing loose tiles.
2. Repairing doors and windows.
3. Removing dead branches or dying trees around the property.
4. Anchor removable objects like lumber piles, tin sheets, and bricks.
5. Keep wooden boards handy to secure glass windows.
6. Store hurricane lanterns, battery-operated torches, extra dry cells, and dry, non-perishable food items.
Things To Keep In Mind –
1. Monitor All India Radio for all the latest updates.
2. Pass information to others but ignore rumours and avoid panic.
3. Evacuate low-lying areas.
4. Board up glass windows or use storm shutters.
5. Secure all doors and windows.
6. Pack essential items like medicines and special food, in case of evacuation.
7. Follow instructions from authorities.
