Cyclone Dana rushing towards Odisha is expected to make a strong landfall between Bhitarkanika Park and Dhamra Port in the wee hours of Friday. Starting on Wednesday, the weather conditions began to change with light to moderate rainfall in many areas in Odisha and West Bengal. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will lash both states on Friday. The evacuation process is ongoing from the coastal regions and likely impacted areas.

Governments and concerned departments in Odisha and West Bengal started taking precautionary measures ahead of the impacts of the cyclonic storm. From closing schools to cancelling trains to suspending flight operations, major steps have been taken in view of the tragic threats and risks of the cyclone. Here are the recent updates about Cyclone Dana:

Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport announced the suspension of flight operations. The airport will shut departures and arrivals from 6 PM on October 24 to 9 AM on October 25. Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport will suspend operations for 16 hours, starting at 5 PM on Thursday till 9 AM on Friday.

Indian Railways cancelled more than 300 trains, including express and passenger trains scheduled to operate between October 23 and 25. National Disaster Response Force teams are deployed on standby in both states. According to a report by Livemint, the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard’s rescue and relief teams are on high alert currently.

Schools in West Bengal’s 9 districts will remain shut from Tuesday to Friday. In addition, schools in Odisha’s 14 districts will be closed from Wednesday to Friday.

Updates About The Evacuation Process

Rescue teams have started evacuating people from vulnerable places likely to be most impacted. Authorities arranged for necessities, water, food, and more for these people. More than 10 lakh people are shifting to proper shelters ahead of the cyclonic storm hitting places and affecting severely.

Bhadrak district administration in Odisha evacuated many people to cyclone shelters. On the other hand, the rescue process is ongoing in West Bengal too. The government has already rescued over 1.14 lakh people from Sagar Island, Sundarbans, and more such areas.
