1. Kolkata Airport Temporarily Shuts Operations
In view of Cyclone REMAL’s impact on the coastal region of West Bengal, including Kolkata, it has been decided to suspend the flight operations from 1200 IST on 26.05.2024 to 0900 IST on 27.05.2024 due to predicted heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall at Kolkata. pic.twitter.com/hnyBRbPW6g

Kolkata has been witnessing rainy weather since the arrival of Cyclone Remal. If reports are to go by, the cyclone will make landfall today at midnight. The landfall will be near Bangladesh and West Bengal. Owing to the cyclone, all flight operations from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport or CCU have been cancelled.
2. 14 NDRF Teams Have Been Deployed So Far To Provide Relief
The anticipated landfall of Cyclone Remal is projected to occur in West Bengal and the coastal regions of Bangladesh around midnight on May 26. The cyclone will bring with it extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.

According to the updates recently shared by livemint, a total of 14 teams from the National Disaster Relief Force or NDRF have been deployed to South Bengal as of now. The cyclone is not expected to be worse than super cyclone Amphan, however, winds can reach a sustainable speed of 120 to 130 kilometres per hour.

Remal in Arabic means sand and the name for the cyclone was suggested by the Sultanate of Oman. Cyclone Remal will impact West Bengal, Tripura, Northeastern states and Coastal Bangladesh. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in the regions where its impact will be the most severe.
