The Ghanta Ghar in Dehradun is one of its greatest cultural symbols. It is a monument rife with history and grandeur. Recently, this iconic structure was tragically vandalised. The incident first came to light when the locals noticed that the clock’s arms were not moving. In addition to that, its chimes also seemed to feel muted. Further inspection revealed that the Ghanta Ghar, inaugurated by Sarojini Naidu, was vandalised and stopped as a result of it.

According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, it is not known when exactly the vandals managed to tamper with the clock’s mechanisms. The locals noticed that the Ghanta Ghar wasn’t chiming like before.

Many people filed several complaints about it with the Dehradun Municipal Corporation or the DMC. Upon further inspection, it was found that the copper mechanisms that made the clock tick had been dismantled.

The vandals had managed to cut through the wires and messed with a satellite-powered mechanism installed to make the clock more accurate. If reports are to go by, the authorities are planning to look at the CCTV footage once an official complaint is lodged.

This means that the investigations will begin soon enough. The TOI article mentions that this is the third such attack on the clock in recent years. The clock is more than 70 years old and was inaugurated by Sarojini Naidu in 1953. It is hoped that the culprits will be found soon.

One of its rarer features is that it has six faces and is hexagonal in shape. It was commissioned by Lala Sher Singh in honour of his father, Balbir Singh. This iconic clock stands at one of the busiest intersections in Dehradun and is a source of regional pride for a number of locals.
