Delhi: 6.7 Million Saplings To Be Planted In 2024-25 To Boost Green Cover; Ambitious Target Despite Limitations On Available Land

In a bid to boost Delhi’s green cover, Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena has directed city agencies to plant a whopping 6.7 million saplings in the coming year (2024-25). This ambitious target comes despite limitations on available land within the capital.

A review meeting on Delhi’s afforestation and plantation initiatives prompted LG to issue a directive. The meeting assessed progress over the past two years. It revealed that officials planted 4.8 million trees and shrubs in 2022-23 and an impressive 8.9 million in 2023-24.

The responsibility for this large-scale plantation drive will fall on the shoulders of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the forest department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

The LG has not only set a high target but has also proposed innovative methods to achieve it. The statement released by the LG secretariat mentions exploring techniques like layered plantations, Miyawaki forests, and even aquatic forests to maximise green cover within the available space.

Enhance The Green Cover

Specific locations for the plantation drive have also been identified. The LG has recommended planting trees along the boundary walls of schools and other institutions. Additionally, the DDA will spearhead a special initiative in the Narela-Bawana area. This will focus on the green belt designated in the city’s Master Plan.

The focus extends beyond just increasing the number of trees. Recognising the importance of wildlife habitat, the LG has suggested planting fruit-bearing trees within the Ridge and forest areas. This will not only enhance the green cover but also provide a vital food source for birds and animals, mitigating the impact of habitat loss.

LG pushed environmental consciousness by recommending the elimination of plastic bags from the planting process. Instead, the statement suggests using eco-friendly alternatives like soft pots made from a mixture of soil and cow dung.
