If you stopped by the liquor store at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, then we’re sure you must be quite disappointed by the half-empty shelves and the lack of variety there. Once a major highlight of India’s busiest airport, the famous liquor store is grappling to survive right now but why? Scroll on to find out.

Delhi Airport’s Only Liquor Store Faces Shortage Issue

According to The Indian Express, the only liquor outlet at the Delhi airport is currently facing an uncharacteristic lull due to a shortage of stock. The outlet, located at the arrival area of Terminal 3, was once famous for being the one-stop shop for premium spirits. However, it is now facing revenue losses, mainly because of the shortage in stock, which has not been replenished since March.

The outlet caters to both domestic and international travellers but has now fallen into a phase of quiet decline because of the half-empty shelves. Besides the dwindling sales and stock shortages, there is also a staff crunch at this liquor store at Delhi airport. That’s why, despite the contract renewal earlier this month, the store continues to report revenue losses.

The airport authorities have asked the Delhi Consumers’ Cooperative Wholesale Store Ltd (DCCWS), which operates the liquor shop, to step in to replenish the stock at Delhi Airport at the earliest. DCCWS is yet to comment on this but some reports suggest that fresh stock will be soon available at this store.

Past Troubles Faced By The Outlet

Besides the shortage of stock right now, the liquor store at the Delhi Airport has faced several other issues in the past. For instance, many media reports suggest that the store was forced to be shut for a few days earlier this year after staff passes were not renewed in time. The issue was subsequently resolved.

As mentioned before, there has been a decline in sales at Delhi airport’s liquor store as well. According to data, the daily average sales went from ₹3.04 lakh in January to ₹2.20 lakh in May–highlighting a sharp decline in daily sales.
