Many cities in India are operating electric buses every day. This is a significant decision by the government and the concerned authorities to choose sustainable substitutes and reduce pollution as much as possible. The Delhi government just included hundreds of electric buses in its existing fleet to be more conscious about nature and going green.
Delhi Government Introduced 500 Electric Buses On Thursday
Taking to the X (formerly Twitter) platform, Ravinder Dabas AAP (@RavinderDabasR) shared about the new buses joining the cityâs fleet.
The plan was to launch 500 electric low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation buses on December 14. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the electric buses on Thursday. The flagging-off event took place at the IP Depot, according to a report by the Indian Express. These buses fall under the FAME II scheme of the Central government. On Wednesday, officials stated all the necessary information about the inauguration of these 500 electric low-floor buses. Also, the Central Command Control room will observe these buses.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot was also present at the IP Depot for todayâs flagging-off event. It is such an important induction considering the fact that this change has a spectacular potential to cut off the emission of lakhs of tonnes of carbon dioxide. Along with an impactful impact on nature, these buses are also equipped with fantastic facilities that will help passengers to have a comfortable journey.
400 electric buses were inaugurated back in September. About 800 buses of these kinds are operating in Delhi from January 2022, according to a report by Economic Times. In a span of almost a year, these vehicles travelled over 42 million km altogether. The noteworthy part here is that the buses helped in reducing over 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The addition of hundreds of electric buses to the present fleet is only going to be beneficial for the national capital.

Amazing Services Provided By These All-New Vehicles
Taking to the microblogging site, Meena Joshi (@MeenaJoshi_) shared a video of the new buses.
The electric buses are indeed one-of-a-kind and are built with exceptional features. From considering safety to comfort, the services added to these vehicles are extraordinary. Some of the amenities that these buses will be providing to the passengers are:
- CCTV cameras
- Kneeling ramps
- Designated area for wheelchairs
- Panic buttons
- Air conditioners
- Produce no noise
- Women can sit on pink seats
- Systems to detect fire and also control the situation
- Live video streams
Delhi is now the Indian city operating the most number of electric buses, 1300 buses. The plans are to ply 10,480 electric buses by the year 2025. An official shared with the Economic Times how most of the old low-floor buses will not be used or produced by 2025. The aim is to operate transportation facilities that are not just sustainable but cleaner as well.

The electric bus network is quite prominent in several cities in the country. More and more places are coming forward to introduce these sustainable transport facilities for lakhs of passengers. Not just in the national capital, there are a few more places in India where you will see these buses plying on the streets and roads. From Bengaluru to Mumbai, Pune, and Surat, the governments of these cities are plying these buses. The transition has been quite impactful in cutting off the emission of carbon dioxide.
India has some major plans for more such buses. By 2027, the aim is to introduce 50,000 electric buses. Right now, there are about 12,000 plying all around the country. Interestingly, the US government is providing support as well.
