Delhi Finishes Off As The Second-Most Polluted City In India For January; This City Was The Most Polluted

Delhi is undoubtedly one of the most polluted cities in the country. However, in a recent report, the city has once again come up on the second spot in the country. Yes, it’s the second most polluted city in India for the fourth consecutive month for January. Here’s more about the report.

As revealed in a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, Delhi has once again come up as the second most polluted city in India for the fourth month. This report was for January, in which the city recorded an average PM2.5 concentration of 165 micrograms per cubic metre.

Highlighting the ongoing air quality concerns, the report revealed that Delhi experienced 23 days in the very poor category. Moreover, three days were in the severe category, three days were in the poor category, and only two days were in the moderate category. In fact, not a single day in the month of January was within the safe daily limit as set by National Ambient Air Quality Standards.

Byrnihat Is The Most Polluted City For January

In case you’re wondering about the most polluted city in India, this was snagged by Byrnihat, which is an industrial town on the Assam-Meghalaya border. It ranked at the first place on the list with an average of 2.5 concentration of 214 µg/m³. Other polluted cities that made it to the top 10 are as follows Hajipur, Talcher, Patna, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Barrackpore, Muzaffar, Nagpur, and Howrah. It’s worth mentioning the three cities from Bihar were in the top 10 and it accounted for 21 out of 24 cities that exceeded the national air-quality limit.

This is truly a worrying situation as a total of 105 out of 240 Indian cities had breached the PM 2.5, NAAQS limit. The limit is set at 60 µg/m³, and the month of January was truly bleak for several cities.

However, it is important to mention in the same breath that Aizwal in Mizoram was the cleanest city in January with an average of PM 2.5. Yes, it just started consideration of 9 µg/m³.
