Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain caused waterlogging in several areas and disrupted air travel in Delhi.

Delhi-NCR woke up to heavy rains and strong winds on Friday morning. While the weather change brought a much-needed respite from the rising temperatures, the incessant rainfall caused waterlogging, uprooting of trees, traffic congestion, and even disrupted air travel. In a rain-related accident, four people were killed in Dwarka.

Dust storms, incessant rain, and strong winds hit Delhi-NCR on Friday morning. According to NDTV, the heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in many parts of Delhi. Some of the worst-affected areas were Dwarka, Khanpur, South Extension Ring Road, Minto Road, Lajpat Nagar, and Moti Bagh.

The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) NowCast reported heavy rains, storms and winds of up to 70-80 kmph across Delhi. The last reported temperature in Delhi on Friday was 19.8°C, a far cry from the hot weather the city witnessed throughout the week.

The weather department reported that the Safdarjung weather station, Delhi’s primary observatory, recorded 77mm of rainfall. While Lodhi Road recorded 78 mm, Palam recorded 30 mm, Najafgarh 19.5 mm, and Pitampura 32 mm of rainfall today.

IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi till Saturday. The forecast shows heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for the region.

In an unfortunate incident, a woman and her three children were killed after heavy rain and strong winds led to a tree falling on their room in Dwarka, Delhi.

IGI Airport Issues Travel Advisory

Heavy rains in Delhi and the National Capital Region also led to more than 120 flights being delayed on Friday morning. As per FlightRadar, the Indira Gandhi International Airport witnessed average delays of 21 minutes for arrivals and 61 minutes for departures today.

Reportedly, more than 40 flights were diverted from the Delhi Airport to Ahmedabad and Jaipur airports. The Delhi Airport issued an advisory for the travellers. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), they assured travellers that the airport is fully functional, however, there can be some delays due to the weather conditions.

Airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have urged passengers to check the latest status of their flights before heading to the airport.
