Delhi Hailstorm: 5 Dead, Power Cuts, Metro Services Disrupted & Flight Operations Affected

Delhi hailstorm

A day after Delhi recorded a scorching high temperature of almost 50°C, the city received heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and dust storms. While the sudden change in weather on Wednesday evening brought down the mercury levels, it also impacted Metro services, and air travel, and caused power cuts and traffic congestion in many areas. So far, five deaths have been confirmed due to storm-related incidents.

Sudden Storms Claim 5 Lives In Delhi-NCR

On Wednesday evening, Delhi experienced gusty winds of 79 kmph, along with heavy rainfall, and hailstorms. The sudden change of weather brought the city’s temperatures from 37°C to 23°C. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather change was caused by the cyclonic circulation over neighbouring Haryana, drawing moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

According to the Times of India report, the sudden rainfall and hailstorm killed two people in Delhi and three in NCR. A man died in Lodhi Road after a high-mast light pole collapsed on his vehicle. A resident of Maujpur died after a tree fell on him during the storm. A biker died in Ghaziabad’s Hapur Chungi and two people were killed because of a tree collapse in Noida.

Metro Lines Affected, Air Travel Disrupted

Reports also reveal that at least 10 flights, scheduled for Delhi Airport, were diverted to Jaipur on Wednesday because of the hailstorm and rainfall. Furthermore, about 50 flights were delayed because of the sudden weather change.

Metro operations were also impacted in Delhi and Noida due to external objects falling on tracks. TOI’s report showed Delhi Metro’s Pink, Yellow, and Red lines were impacted. Also, operations on Noida’s Aqua Line were also briefly affected. Thankfully, services were restored later.

Traffic Jams, Power Cuts & Toppled Hoardings

The hailstorm and incessant rainfall in Delhi-NCR caused the traffic to snarl on Wednesday. Power cuts and waterlogging were also observed in several areas. Hoardings and billboards fell in many areas, and trees were uprooted due to the strong winds.

The winds were so strong that a road signboard in Noida fell on motorcycles parked below. Another board, with ‘Welcome to Noida’ signage, fell on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.
