Great news! Delhi’s IGI Airport has now been awarded the ‘Net Zero Waste to Landfill’ Platinum Certification from the IGBC for all its terminals. This makes it the first airport in the country to receive this recognition. The airport actively uses various techniques to reduce emissions and minimise environmental impact. Here’s more on it.
Delhi IGI Airport Gets Platinum Certification For Net Zero Waste
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has awarded Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport the ‘Net Zero Waste to Landfill’ Platinum Certification. As per a report by The Indian Express, the certification was awarded for the operations phase, making it the first airport in the country to achieve this. The update was also shared by X user, @dibyamendali, on their account.
The airport, operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), shared with The Indian Express that approximately 95% of solid waste, including food waste and recyclables, is diverted away from landfills. DIAL authorities also told The Indian Express that they achieved this through proper source segregation, recycling, and in-house composting.

A Green Commitment Towards A Future-Ready Airport
As per the report, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, also stated that Delhi Airport tries to embed Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles across all operations. These efforts can help reduce emissions and work holistically towards community development. He also added that this recognition goes beyond just being a certificate. It also validates DIAL’s unwavering commitment to building a future-ready and climate-resilient airport.
Reportedly, the waste management system at Delhi’s IGI Airport includes real-time waste tracking, two-bin and four-bin segregation models, Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), and organic waste composters. All of these measures aim to minimise landfill use and maximise resource recovery.
Furthermore, the terminal buildings at Delhi Airport are already certified at the highest platinum level by both the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and the US Green Building Council (USGBC). The airport adheres to all the required green building standards.

Last year, Delhi IGI Airport also became the first in the country to achieve ‘Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport” status. It received a Level 5 certification for this achievement. These achievements matter because they show how airports can reduce their impact on the environment with efficient techniques.
