In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Delhi-NCR residents experienced sudden shaking, with many stepping out of their homes in confusion and concern.

Mild Panic As Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake occurred at 4:43 AM IST at a depth of 75 kilometres. The epicentre was located near Baghlan, Afghanistan. Despite being hundreds of kilometres away, the intensity of the quake was strong enough to travel across borders.

In the Delhi-NCR area, the tremors lasted for nearly 30 seconds. Locals reported and posted on social media that their beds were shaking, ceiling fans were swaying, and their pets were reacting unusually. Some people took to social media immediately after, with videos capturing slight movements in household items, while others posted their reactions using the phrase “Earthquake in Delhi-NCR.”

There have been no reports of injury or property damage in India so far. Emergency services remained on alert for some hours following the event, while local authorities assured that all infrastructure was safe.

Afghanistan’s Seismic Activity Continues To Rattle Neighbours

Afghanistan is located in one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. Earthquakes in this region are not uncommon and have often had widespread effects on neighbouring countries, especially India and Pakistan.

This latest tremor is another reminder of the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Though this quake was of moderate magnitude, its reach across borders shows how interconnected the region’s seismic risks are.

Residents in quake-prone areas need to remain prepared. Experts advise moving to a safe zone during tremors, like standing in door frames or hiding under sturdy furniture. Avoid using lifts or standing near glass windows.

If outdoors, stay clear of buildings, poles, and trees. After the tremor, check for gas leaks, structural damage, or injuries.

While the Afghanistan earthquake tremors in Delhi-NCR did not cause visible harm, they acted as a wake-up call, reminding us all of the unpredictability of nature—and the need to stay alert.
